While parading sixteen rescued pregnant ladies between the ages of seventeen and thirty seven years at the State commands headquarters in Umuahia, the State Director of DSS, Mathew Obodoechi said the Command acted on an intelligent report at its disposal that prompted the arrest of the proprietor of the centre.

Mr. Obodoechi said that the foundation which is run by Dr. H.N. Orikara was raised by the command keeping pregnant ladies who upon delivery are given a paltry sum of Fifty thousand Naira N50, 000) and sent away while their babies are sold to people from different parts of the Country.

According to the State Director of DSS, the victims are usually introduced to the centre by their close relatives and friends, "including a mother who did not want her husband to know of the pregnancy of their daughter."

The DSS Director then urged members of the public to desist from encouraging pregnant ladies to go to "baby factories" for whatever reason, whether financial or otherwise.

While answering questions from newsmen after being paraded, one of the rescued girls, Miracle Chidinma Nwankwo aged 20 years, disclosed that she was pregnant before she was brought to the centre by a man who saw her at Onitsha.

According to her, she became stranded after she became pregnant and that the parents were not aware that she was at the centre while she was told that after delivering the baby that she would be allowed to go home with her child after birth.

Dr. Orikara answering questions on his arrest denied involving in the allegations being leveled against him and maintained that he runs a non-governmental, charitable Organization, the Cross Foundation that is incorporated in Abuja and registered with the State's Women Affairs Ministry, Abia State.
