The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has called on the general public to make health their ‘new high’ in life instead of drugs. This was the message during a sensitisation walk at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) tagged Walk Against Drugs. The walk which took place at the weekend is part of activities marking the 2013 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking.

Director General of the NDLEA, Mr Femi Ajayi who led stakeholders during the walk that commenced from the Old Parade Ground to the Millennium Park in Abuja, said that the motive of the enlightenment programme was to raise awareness on the dangers of narcotic drugs.

According to Femi, “this walk is aimed at sensitising the general public to the devastating health, security and socio-economic consequences of drug trafficking and abuse. We are deeply concerned about the risk to public health and this walk is a good platform to alert the public on new psychoactive substances, abuse of solvents like fuel, nail polish cleaner, rubber solution and others that are dangerous but not controlled by the law”.

The United Nations adopted June 26 of every year as world drug day following resolution 42/112 of December 7, 1987. The theme for the commemoration this year is New Psychoactive Substances with the slogan; “Make Health Your ‘New High’ In Life Not Drugs”. As the country joins other nations of the world, the Agency has flagged off a weeklong programme of events targeted at the youth population and other vulnerable groups in the society.

NDLEA DG urged members of the public to shun get rich quick syndrome and imbibe high moral standard of living. Stakeholders that participated in the walk include the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Paramilitary Organisations, Ministries and Agencies as well as members of National Youth Service Corps.

Drug abuse education materials such as shirts, face caps, towels and hand bills were distributed to members of the public. The materials had various inscriptions such as Health Is The New High Not Drugs, Say No To Drugs And Yes To Life among others. Some residents of the FCT who expressed satisfaction with the enlightenment campaign called on the NDLEA to make the walk a regular exercise.
