CALDi Postdoctoral Fellowships for African Linguistics at University of Cape Town in South Africa, 2014

The Centre for African Language Diversity (CALDi) is offering postdoctoral fellowships for students who wish to study African linguistics at the University of Cape Town. One or more Postdoctoral research fellowships are offered worth of R200 000 annually up to four years. The research will primarily be focused on Khoisan languages or Southern African Bantu languages. The closing date for applications is 31 July 2013.

Study Subject (s): Fellowships are awarded to study African linguistics at the University of Cape Town.

Course Level: Fellowships are offered for pursuing postdoctoral program at the University of Cape Town.

Scholarship Provider: The Centre for African Language Diversity (CALDi) at the University of Cape Town, sponsored by the AW Mellon Foundation.

Scholarship can be taken at: South Africa

Eligibility: Applicants are required to meet the following conditions:

-A Doctoral degree in Linguistics must have been awarded within the past 5 years.

-Applicants who have held academic and/or professional positions since obtaining the Doctoral degree will not normally be considered.

-Applicants are required to be familiar with African language studies, and preference will be given to applicants who have experience in working with Khoisan languages or Southern African Bantu languages.

-Applicants must be proficient in the English language and in at speak at least one African language.

-The successful candidate(s) must be available to commence with the CALDi Fellowship by no later than 01 September 2013.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Students of South Africa can apply for these fellowships.

Scholarship Description: The Centre for African Language Diversity (CALDi) has embarked on a 4 year project sponsored by the AW Mellon Foundation for research in African linguistics. One or more Postdoctoral research fellowships are offered to suitably qualified candidates who will be required to conduct research within the field of African linguistics. The research will primarily be focused on Khoisan languages or Southern African Bantu languages. Professional development activities such as limited teaching will cover the fields of African linguistics including phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, language classification and sociolinguistics.

Number of award (s): One or more Postdoctoral research fellowships are offered.

Duration of award (s): Fellowships are awarded for four years.

What does it cover? The value of the CALDi fellowship will be R200 000 annually, renewable annually for a maximum of four years, subject to evidence of satisfactory academic performance

How to Apply: Applications should be submitted to CALDi via email (CALDi-at-uct.ac.za) and marked for the attention of the director of CALDi, Dr Matthias Brenzinger.  The following documents will be required:

-A letter of application includes research interests, areas of expertise and experience in the field of African language studies.

-Proof that the Doctoral degree has been attained, as per the conditions stated above.

-A CV including a list of any publications.

-Certified copies of academic transcripts.

-The names of at least two academics, who have taught, supervised or worked with the applicant in the past 6 years.
