Sunderland's McClean In Wigan Talks

Wigan are close to making James McClean their 10th summer signing after Sunderland accepted an undisclosed fee for the Republic of Ireland winger.

He could join up with the Latics before they face Manchester United in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

The 24-year-old moved to Sunderland from Derry City in 2011 and has scored 11 goals in 70 games for the club.

But he has fallen out of favour with manager Paolo Di Canio, who seems willing to let McClean depart.

England international Adam Johnson has regularly started on the left wing for Sunderland during pre- season, while the arrival of Italy midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini from Juventus for £6.5m in July appears to have further limited McClean's first-team opportunities at the Stadium of Light.

McClean, who was part of the Republic's squad at Euro 2012 and has been capped 13 times, enjoyed an impressive first season in the Premier League under the management of Martin O'Neill, his form earning him a new three-year contract.

Although he featured in 36 of Sunderland's 38 league fixtures during the 2012-13 campaign, he struggled to build upon his early promise as the Black Cats battled against relegation.

FA Cup winners Wigan began the Championship season with a 4-0 win at Barnsley on Saturday and are strongly tipped for an immediate return to the top flight under new manager Owen Coyle.
