In that 11th hour, maximum productivity is key, so stay on track with digital downloads that keep distractions at bay. We've picked essential Google Chrome extensions and, for the most Internet addicted, super powerful software for Mac and PC. If you have about a million tabs open right now or are easily sidetracked by social media, turn to these four apps for distraction-free working on your desktop.

  • Stay Focusd (free) — Kill the temptation to get lost in your email inbox or a Twitter stream by limiting the amount of time you can spend on those sites. This Chrome extension blocks the sites you choose once your allotted time is up. For the most distracted, there's the Nuclear Option, which blocks sites completely, with no way to cancel after activation.
  • Nanny for Google Chrome (free) — This extension prohibits sites during specific times of day, called "blocksets." It also provides detailed statistics about how much time you waste, er, spend during the day on these sites.
  • Controlled Multi-Tab Browsing (free) — If, like us, you have lots of tabs open while you work, that multi-window workspace is taking away from your productivity. This extension only allows a restricted number of tabs to be open so that you can more actively engage in what you're doing.
  • Freedom ($10) — This software for Windows and Mac shuts down the Internet for up to eight hours. Users can set how many minutes of freedom they'd like to enjoy before the networking capabilities are turned off again.
