Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole is all set to join Tottenham next week following a dreadful year-long spell at Anfield.

Cole joined the Reds for free last summer as he looked to kick-start his career after enduring a poor final season at Chelsea following several months out through injury.

His luck wasn't much better at Liverpool as injuries again ravaged his season, preventing him from gaining any real momentum or consistency, and when he did play, he couldn't find any sort of form.

Although he cost the club nothing in transfer fees, Cole ended up being an expensive signing, with Liverpool paying more than 4 million pounds in wages on a contract worth £90,000 a week to the West Ham academy graduate.

However, The Daily Mail believe that this period of his career is about to come to an end. They understand Cole will undergo a medical at Spurs this coming week ahead of £3 million move to White Hart Lane as he looks to complete a full pre-season for the first time in three years.

Cole's Liverpool career took a blow when the man who ensured the transfer happened, Christian Purslow, lost his job in the wake of John Henry's purchase of the Anfield club last year.

Henry is understood to have been bemused as to why an ageing player was given a contract so lucrative, and of four years' duration, as he hoped to concentrate on youth.

Over the course of the season, Cole played 20 times in the league, scoring just twice and grabbing only one assist, a record on a par with his form in the Europa League where he played in 12 matches, scoring once.

Should the move to Spurs materialize, it could allow Luka Modric to leave for Manchester United as the Premier League champions look for a player to replace Paul Scholes after the former England international retired from football.

It is understood that Spurs plan to offload Alan Hutton, Robbie Keane, David Bentley, Wilson Palacios, Sebastien Bassong and Giovani dos Santos over the summer, with Palacios attracting attention from Napoli and Sevilla, whilst dos Santos has also been linked with the Spaniards.
