John Obi Mikel has spoken about his delight at scoring his first league goal for Chelsea as the Blues defeated Fulham 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
.
It was the midfielder's first league goal for the club in 185 Premier League appearances and he was suitably delighted at his achievement.
.
"It was good (that I scored) but I think it was all about winning," he said at the end of the game. Chelsea came into Saturday's on the back of a four- game streak with no win and the Nigerian pointed out the importance of the win against the Cottagers.
.
"We lost two games in a row. The most important thing was to win the match. I am glad we did that.
.
"I am glad we got the three points and my goal was just a bonus," he added.
.
Mikel, who joined Chelsea in 2006, then revealed that his teammates had always poked fun at him as a result of his consistent failure to reap much joy in front of goal.
.
" I am happy because it has been a long time (since I last scored for Chelsea).
.
" The guys had been killing me about it. They say (to me); 'when you go to play for your national team, you score but you don't score for Chelsea.'
.
"It's good for me to get a goal; my first premier league goal.
.
"I have scored in the FA Cup a couple of times. I am very happy and I am very proud of the guys. We fought hard for this win," he said.
.
Quizzed on whether he would try harder in subsequent games to score more goals, Mikel said; "I do practice in training sometimes. I am sure the guys will give me a lot of stick when I get back into the dressing room."
