There are indications that members of the 24-man Plateau State House of Assembly are planning to impeach the Speaker, Hon. John Clark Dabwan.

The lawmakers, according investigation, accuse Dabwan of insensitivity, high handedness and poor representation before the executive arm of government.

On many occasions, since last year, there had been moves by some lawmakers to remove the speaker who was elected in June 2011, but such moves had always been thwarted before they were carried out.

In the latest move, a reliable source in the Assembly said the aggrieved lawmakers, who are currently on recess, had perfected plans to impeach the speaker as soon as the House resumes plenary this week

It was gathered that most of the lawmakers have lost confidence in Dabwan and are rooting for the return of the immediate past Speaker, Hon. Istifanus Mwansat, who led the sixth Assembly till the end of the first tenure of Governor Jonah Jang.

It was gathered that before the lawmakers went on recess penultimate week, they had hoped to use their last day of sitting to impeach the speaker.

But unknown to them, Dabwan got wind of the plot and quickly played a fast one on them by merely communicating to members on phone the decision of the House to go on recess instead of allowing the lawmakers to sit and subsequently sneaked out of the country.

"If not that the speaker blocked the lawmakers from sitting, he would have been removed," one of the lawmakers in the camp of the Speaker told our correspondent in Jos, at the weekend.

It was also learnt that the aggrieved lawmakers were later invited for a meeting with the governor to resolve all contending issues.

However, it was not clear after the meeting if the aggrieved lawmakers agreed to drop the impeachment move, a development said to be generating anxiety among stakeholders.
