Benue State Government said it had discovered 59 illegal examination centres otherwise known as "miracle centres" in parts of the state. The state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Elizabeth Ugo, disclosed this at the ongoing accountability briefing organised by the Ministry of Information in collaboration with Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, to allow commissioners give account of their stewardship.

Ugo said the illegal centres were discovered as part of efforts to check the fraudulent method of acquiring school certificates. She also disclosed that punitive measures had been taken against schools which were involved in examination malpractices.

The commissioner said in some instances, some principals were demoted while others were sacked, depending on the gravity of their offence. Ugo added that plans were on to hold an education summit later in the year where stakeholders would come together to discuss the best way to revamp education in the state.

She reiterated the determination of the state government to do everything humanly possible to restore the lost glory of the sector, adding that huge funds had been expended in revitalising of tertiary institutions in the state.

The commissioner also disclosed that in a bid to maintain education standard in the state, three colleges had been shut due to poor staffing and infrastructure as stipulated by the National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE. Ugo listed the schools as Emmanuel Ebije Ikwe College of Education, Otukpa, Ityav-Gar College of Education, Mkar and Malamin College of Education, Gboko.
