Cross River State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Edak Iwuchukwu, has while briefing newsmen in Calabar said the State Government has reactivated Women Development Centres across the State.

Mrs. Iwuchukwu stated this during a ministerial press briefing at the Ernest Etim Press Centre, Calabar.

Geared towards realizing her goals for women empowerment, she said the State Government had entered into a partnership with the National Centre for Women Development, Abuja and, the Japanese International Development Agency (JICA).

According to Mrs. Iwuchukwu, this was intended "to reactivate three women development centres to serve the vocational skills training needs of women in the State".

The three centres, she said were located in Ogoja, Abi, as well as, Oban, in Akampka LGA and, were easily accessible to women in the three senatorial districts.

She listed some of the vocational skills undertaken by the centres to include; tailoring, hair dressing, catering, bead making, alongside, interior decoration.

Concerning child development, the Commissioner said her ministry had embarked on training of principal officers of Local Government Children Parliament and Women Development Officers.

The training on the provision, procedures, roles and responsibilities of children parliament, she maintained, was aimed at building the capacity of the officers concerned.

A similar workshop, she said had been held across the eighteen local government areas to acquaint them on the role of children parliament in enhancing the participatory rights of children.

Also, the Commissioner said in order to make the implementation of the child rights law effective, the capacity of court assessors and 30 stakeholders was strengthened.

Stressing that, with such development, the assessors, would be able to function effectively and assist in the reduction of child abuse in the State.

On the child's rights implementation, Mrs. Iwuchukwu said the Cross River State Child Right Law 2009, has been simplified.

Sixteen (16) thousand copies of the abridged version of the law, she said, had been printed. While 11,340 copies have been distributed to school children in the Southern Senatorial District, so far.
