Over N1.7 billion has been paid as monthly pensions to retired Local Government workers as well as teaching and non-teaching primary school staff in Ogun State between January and September this year. In the same vein, over N450 million has been paid as gratuities to the same category of pensioners from the monthly allocation received by the Bureau of Local Government Pension, from the monthly Joint Allocation Accounts Committee (JAAC) meeting during the same period.

Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Local Governments Pension, Mr. Ayo Kolawole disclosed this today while addressing members of the State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs when they visited the Bureau for a 2013 budget performance monitoring.

Kolawole explained that the Bureau received 15% deductions of salaries of primary school teaching and non-teaching Staff directly from JAAC on a monthly basis, while local governments are required to remit theirs in respect of their staff directly to their Pension Fund Administrators (PFA).

Responding, Chairman of the Committee, Prince Olakunle Oluomo lauded management of the agency for its effort at ensuring prompt payment of pensions and gratuities, assuring that the committee would do its best to ensure its adequate funding by the Executive arm.

On the proposed amendment to the Pension Reform Law 2006 which seeks to extend the effective take-off date of the contributory pension scheme in the State, Prince Oluomo stated that the law had been amended, passed and signed by Governor Amosun.
