 The Ogun State Government has expended the sum of N5.699b on the construction of 28 model schools located in all the 20 Local Government Areas between January and August this year with 15 of them at various stages of completion.     Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in the State, Barr. Segun Odubela made this revelation in his office while addressing members of the State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology in continuation of the Assembly’s oversight functions on budget performance monitoring.     Odubela, represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Tunji Abimbola explained that the first batch of the model schools would be completed by the end of the year.     He said when completed, the schools would change the face of education in the State, affirming that they would be equipped with necessary structure and equipment to aid teaching and learning.     The Commissioner added that the sum of N391.8m was spent on the registration of 44,928 internal candidates for the 2013 May / June WAEC examinations, just as another N53m was expanded to conduct the 2012/2013 Basic Examination Certificate Examination for 79,408 students.     Speaking in the same vein, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Alhaji Ambali Isola said as part of measures to ensure improved performance of students, over N116m was spent to conduct the 2nd term unified examination for public secondary schools, Government Science Technical Colleges, screening text and placement of primary six pupils into public secondary schools as well as the conduct of May/June 2013 NTC/NBC examinations.     He added that a total of 92,816 primary school leavers had been successfully placed in various secondary schools across the State based on performance and proximity of residence.     The Committee members also visited the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) where the Board Chairman, Hon. Mufutau Ajibola disclosed that about 26,052 set of student furniture had been supplied to primary and junior secondary schools alongside 7,148 furniture for their teachers.     Hon. Ajibola noted that the State Government had paid the sum of N1.49b as its 2010 and 2011 UBE counterpart fund, while the Board had commenced the payment of 15% Peculiar Allowance for teachers in public primary schools in the State.     Responding, the Committee Chairman, Hon. Adeyinka Mafe noted that the essence of the exercise was to promote transparency and ensure adequate planning and implementation of the annual budget, promising that the Assembly would always complement efforts in the delivery of democratic dividends to the people.
