Even though they are generally seen as loose, and people who should not be taken seriously, actresses are nevertheless very important in the world.

Their words and actions carry a lot of weight because a lot of people, especially the youths, look up to them. By virtue of their fame, they also mix with the high and mighty and are therefore society mainstays.

And at this time that Nigeria is gradually settling into a democracy that is slowly turning the fortunes of the country around for the better, Nollywood actresses who are seen as unserious people are the ones speaking out on national issues.

While prominent women in the country are afraid to speak against issues affecting women, motherhood and the nation at large, Nollywood actresses have been speaking out without fear or favour. Their list includes Tonto Dike, Stella Damasus, Monalisa Chinda who all spoke out against the one-time raging Child Marriage Bill.

Now, their disputed leader, by virtue of acting achievements, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has spoken out against the ongoing ASUU strike, while their leader, by virtue of her position as the president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberesima, spoke out against all the recent air mishaps in the country.

Omotola Jolade and Ibinabo have done really well with this one. There are still many other actresses we are hoping would follow this path!
