Army arrests 25 suspects over illegal oil bunkering in Ogoniland

The Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta has arrested 25 persons in Gokana local government area of Rivers for alleged illegal bunkering. A spokesman for the task force, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha, told newsmen in Port Harcourt weekend that the operation was jointly carried out with the council officials."Apart from the arrests, the task force also seized a locally made wooden boat laden with unspecified quantity of crude oil ready for sale,'' he said. Antigha said that the task force had destroyed about 2,000 illegal refineries in the Ogoni speaking area of Rivers in the past seven months.He also said it was suspected that large quantity of crude oil might have been spilled on the environment by the oil thieves. He called on the residents to give useful information to the security operatives to enable them to nab the oil thieves and save the environment. (NAN)
