Soyinka wants Turai prosecuted for 'kidnapping' Yar'Adua

...As TUC marks International Women DayNobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has advocated the prosecution of Turai, wife of President Umaru Yar'Adua, for what he described as kidnapping, false imprisonment and abuse of spouse thereby desecrating the sanctity of Nigeria's presidency. He spoke on Monday in Ikeja, Lagos, while addressing a group of over 1,000 women under the aegis of Women Arise, a non-governmental organisation that staged a peaceful protest in Lagos to condemn the continued keeping away of Yar'Adua from Nigerians by his wife, two weeks after he was said to have returned to the country.  This is as the women commission of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), on Monday in marking the 2010 International Women Day advocated that women be allowed a wider space in political sphere to contribute to nation building.  Various speakers at the conference, including Peter Esele, president-general of TUC and Rose Orji-Kalu, chairperson of the commission, also advocated gender equality at work places and prioritising of women development as the fulcrum for national development.  Soyinka addressing women who marched through the streets with placards of various inscriptions such as 'Turai stop deceiving Nigerians' said "from the banner I see here, some of you have realised that there is spousal abuse. It is not one way, not just man to woman but woman to man. We have an example with the president of the nation being abused physically by a woman. He has been kidnapped by a woman under false imprisonment. "For me, this is sacrilege, acute sacrilege and I think we should begin criminal proceeding against Turai for kidnapping and false imprisonment of her husband. If it were in a civilised society, this woman should be in court by now for kidnapping and false imprisonment. Far even worst than abusing her spouse, she is also abusing a nation, abusing and insulting the intelligence of a nation." On the Jos crisis, he accused the inspector general of police (IGP) and other security agencies of going to sleep while gunmen unleashed mayhem on Nigerians in Jos. "They (security agencies) should be held responsible. Worst still, the legislature instead of doing what is expected of them, they are busy doing something else. Women should rise up because women and children were the major victims of the crisis," he said.
