Main Purpose of the Job:  

The exact role of the Director focuses on Teaching and Learning and on student progress.

It aims:

•   To deliver excellent outcomes (academic and non-academic) for pupils.

•   Provide highly effective leadership and management within their subject area.

•   Build an exceptional team to develop outstanding provision of their subject.

•   Act as a de facto whole-college leader, fulfilling leadership responsibilities wherever necessary in the college.

•   Develop, prepare, and deliver teaching and learning up to a full timetable.

•   Act as an expert in sport and provide support and advice across the College.

•   Outstanding provision, quality, and uptake of PE and sport Day Waterman College and the Asu community

•   Outstanding outcomes for students and staff

•   The continuous improvement of PE and sport

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership:  

The Director will:

•   Take collective responsibility for the success of the college, displaying professionalism and acting as a role model for pupils and staff.

•   Help to select and appoint, deploy and manage staff (including performance management) to ensure effective teaching and learning takes place in the college.

•   Encourage interaction and teamwork within the department sharing ideas and new initiatives identifying new ways of teaching their subject area.

•   Monitor the work of teachers within the department offering guidance and support where required and helping them to identify improved ways of working.

•   In conjunction with the Leadership Team, develop rigorous procedures for monitoring the performance of all staff including setting objectives, CPD needs and, where appropriate, individual support plans.

•   Involve all staff in decision making, so far as it is possible, in order that all who work in the college feel a sense of ownership and involvement.

•   Involve all staff in creating a learning environment that is positive, affirming, and supportive.

•   Create, maintain, and enhance effective working relationships with staff.

•   Play a major role as a Middle Leader in the development of all aspects of the College, including its policies and their implementation.

•   Chair and produce the agenda for effective Department meetings. To ensure minutes are taken, kept secure and copied to Leadership Team and others as appropriate.

•   Assist with the production of relevant Department materials for inclusion in the prospectus, options booklets, newsletter and website.

Teaching and Learning:

The Director will:

•   Assure the quality of teaching, coaching, and other related activity, striving continually towards excellence.

•   Assist in the appointment of new staff.

•   Plan and provide for the continual professional learning of teachers and support staff.

•   Ensure that school policies are applied consistently and rigorously, particularly those relating to teaching and learning, assessment, behaviour, homework and attendance.

•   Encourage the use of ICT in all appropriate aspects of teaching and learning, and administration.

•   Manage appropriate budgets, delegating resources fairly and ensuring the principles of best value.

Community Relations and Partnership:  

The Director will:

•   Maximise the professional effectiveness and development of staff

•   Be responsible for the leadership and management of PE and sport throughout DWC

•   Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of PE and sport in DWC

•   Promote a positive learning environment and an achievement culture

•   Be an exemplary role model for students and colleagues

•   Promote caring and productive relationships between and among staff, students and parents

•   Look for and use opportunities to support the development of the whole child through spiritual, moral, social, and cultural activities, and help to develop tolerance and understanding of the diversity of cultures within and outside the college.

•   Work closely with other colleges, locally, nationally, and internationally.

Resource Management:

The Director for PE and Sports will:

•   Take responsibility for department resourcing and timetable allocation.

•   Be responsible for the sound management of their department within the budget allocated.

•   Manage all available resources and allocate them to support effective learning and teaching.

•   Maintain and control the use of those resources.

•   Deploy all staff effectively in order to improve the quality of education provided.

•   Ensure that there is regular monitoring of the budget and the oversight of the use of resources.

Specific tasks:

The Director of PE and Sports will:

•   Organise teaching within the PE department, delegating staff and resources as appropriate

•   Implement the DWC Strategic Implementation Plan where it relates to PE and sport

•   Prepare and implement the PE and sport development plan

•   Ensure that standards in PE and sport are consistent, seeking out and sharing good practice and eliminating inadequacy

•   Plan and oversee the programme of enrichment through PE and sport

•   Plan and oversee the programme of community sport and leisure

•   Ensure that PE and sport provision is fully inclusive

•   Undertake such reviews of progress as are required

•   Attend relevant meetings, seminars, and conferences

•   Liaise with partners and other external agencies

•   Carry out other reasonable duties that the Principal may ask you to perform

Key Performance Indicators (KPI):

Curriculum and Teaching KPIs

•   PE and Sports Curriculum organization and operation: Level of organisation and formation of groups and group operations for various learning domains in the PE and Sports curriculum.

•   PE and Sports Curriculum planning and implementation: Degree of overall curriculum planning and implementation in the college.

•   Teaching innovation: Degree of diversified and active teaching methods employed by teachers in the area of PE and Sports.

•   Ratio of remedial teaching: Number of students receiving remedial teaching/Total number of students in school.

Stakeholder Communication and Community Relations KPIs:

• Number of registered reports of positive and/or negative feedback from parents and other stakeholders regarding students' activities and achievement in the area of Humanities.

• Number of registered breaks in communication with parents and other stakeholders regarding students' activities and achievement in the area of Humanities.

Student Activities and Support KPIs

• PE and Sports Activity: Degree of student participation in PE and Sports activities.

• Activity award: Number of students publicly receiving awards/ Total number of students participating in external competitions and events.

• Student activity support: Degree of school funding for student activities/Total number of students.  

Departmental Improvement KPIs:  

• Ability to facilitate the development of PE and Sports curriculum improvement plan in which goals, evidence of attainment, objectives and strategies are clearly aligned and articulated.

• Capacity to work with other staff to identify the knowledge and skills that teachers need to implement the school improvement instructional strategies

• Alignment of assessment, curriculum, and instruction

• Number of opportunities provided for staff to learn about research-based strategies that address identified problem(s)

Marketing and Publicity KPIs:  

• Number of opportunities sought to raise the school's profile in the area of PE and Sports locally, regionally, nationally and internationally by ensuring the school's representation at and participation in key events and initiatives.

Requirements Essential Desirable:

•   Qualified Teacher Status

•   Graduate level qualification in an appropriate discipline

•   Enhanced CRB clearance

•   Secure knowledge of Safeguarding policies and procedures

•   Significant experience of successful teaching in this curriculum area

•   Be accountable to the Teachers Standard

•   Be fully aware of OFSTED standards for teaching and able to deliver lessons appropriately  

•   Ability to lead a team of teachers delivering in this curriculum area

•   Ability to create and deliver Strategic Implementation Plans to enhance performance

•   Experience of creating intervention strategies to improve student performance

•   Experience of dealing with parents and other stakeholders to resolve issues
