University of Greenwich is offering postgraduate research scholarships for UK and international students. Scholarships will be awarded for the duration of 3 years (subject to satisfactory performance). The successful candidate will receive a contribution to tuition fees equivalent to the university’s Home/EU rate for the duration of their scholarship. International applicants will need to pay the remainder tuition fee of £7,279 for the 2014/15 session and is subject to an annual increase. Application deadline is 1st July 2014.

Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded within the faculty of Architecture, Computing and Humanities at University of Greenwich. Project Title: Modelling Water Mist suppression interaction with pyrolysis and combustion.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing postgraduate research program at University of Greenwich.

Scholarship Provider: University of Greenwich, UK

Scholarship can be taken at: UK

Eligibility:

-1st Class or Upper 2nd class Honours Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree (UK or UK equivalent) in a relevant discipline.

-Previous experience of undertaking research (e.g. undergraduate or taught masters dissertation).

-Familiar with C++ programming or other similar programming language.

-Familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

-Knowledge of fluid dynamics.

-Experience of CFD (e.g. use of codes such as Phoenics, CFX, ANSYS products).

Scholarship Open for International Students: UK and international students can apply for these postgraduate research scholarships.

Scholarship Description: The proposed research aims to produce theoretical models that will include and model the effect of water mist on current pyrolysis, pool fire and gaseous combustion models. These models will then be implemented and tested within an existing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. This will have a number of benefits including helping in modern performance based building designs that will allow novel building designs to be implemented that would have been impossible under a prescriptive based design. With present modelling capabilities it is possible to demonstrate some of the benefits of a water mist system, e.g. cooling of the combustion region and O2 displacement. It is possible to establish the relative performance of a particular water mist system compared to another possible water mist system. However, with the new models, it should be possible to design and test a water mist system for the specific combustion processes and material that will be encountered and in addition, evaluate the absolute performance of a water mist system.
