Bello resumes at environment ministry; pledges completion of projects

Returnee Commissioner for Environment in Lagos State,  Mr. Tunji Bello has pledged speedy completion of all projects commenced by his predecessor, Dr Muiz Banire. Mr Bello who served as Environment Commissioner in the Tinubu administration, declared that the state has zero tolerance for abandoned projects.

Mr. Tunji Bello  The commissioner who assumed office last week in company of the Special Adviser to the Governor on the Environment, Dr. Taofik Folami, said that all on-going projects in the area of beautification, drainage, waste management and others under the purview of the Ministry of the Environment will be completed before new ones are embarked upon.

The Commissioner commended the Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola and  the immediate past commissioner in the ministry, Dr. Banire for the height they have taken the environment to in the last four years.

According to him, the Governor invested heavily in the environment culminating in construction of world class drainage channels that have helped tremendously in flood management.

The beautification of Lagos, he noted, has added aesthetics and socio – economic value to the city while quite a lot has been achieved in waste management.

He recalled that the journey to environmental regeneration started about twelve years ago with the administration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who ensured that heaps of refuse that dotted the landscape were evacuated.

Mr Bello promised to invest heavily in monitoring and inspection of the environment and will ensure that all the agencies of the Ministry  work together as a team. Receiving the Commissioner and Special Adviser, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Muyideen Akinsanya and his counterpart in the Office of Environmental Services, Mrs Titi Anibaba pledged unflinching support for the team who they said were part and parcel of the environment family and as such were already familiar with the job thrust on their shoulders.

This is nice follow-up. Continuity has been one of the problems facing government projects in Nigeria. New government new projects without taking cognizance of previous projects yet to be completed. Standard is also a key area to look into. Lifespan of most projects executed in the country is very short because of the use of sub-standard materials. Adequate monitoring and control will surely help.
