THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) yesterday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately constitute a committee that would ensure proper implementation of the Education Trust Fund (ETF), an intervention agency for educational institutions in the country.

The Group commended the President for signing the ETF Bill into Law, even as it expressed confidence in the ability of the Federal Government to fix most of the problems confronting the nation. Urging support for the proposed six-year single term for governors and president, National President of NANS, Jude Imagwe, yesterday, in Benin, said the constitutional amendment, if it sailed through, would help public officials deliver on specific goals.

"I believe it will help the system because those who are aspiring to be governors and president will know that they just have a single opportunity to either write their names in gold or destroy them."

Imagwe expressed confidence in the ability of the federal government to tackle the numerous challenges in the educational sector, adding that, with the signing of the ETF Bill into law, the education roadmap of government would be achieved.

"Some of us are going to watch keenly how these funds are deployed because the academic environment is one that we cannot abandon. Approval of money has not always been the problem but how it is used. Implementation has also been the challenge, and we want to charge Mr. President, just as he has made approval of such, he should further set up a committee of trusted persons that will see to the implementation of public fund for the benefit of the people.

"We believe that, as a father and product of our educational sector, he (Jonathan) is going to throw his weight behind educational policies that will restore standards that everybody will be proud of.

It is unfortunate that Nigerians are running to neighbouring Ghana in pursuit of Education, but, with this, we are looking at a situation where people will be running to Nigeria to seek for quality education, which will be a credit to the government.

"It is also worthy to note that, with the signing of the ETF into law, it will be saddled with developing education at the tertiary level by providing facilities that will meet modern standards, creation of conducive academic environment, infrastructural development and expansion of lecture halls with laboratory equipment for researchers."
