Conrad Murray, the US doctor convicted of the involuntary manslaughter of Michael Jackson, has been sentenced to four years in county jail.

Murray was found guilty earlier this month after a six-week trial.

Prosecutors for the state of California have asked the judge in the case to sentence Murray to four years in prison, the maximum allowed.

His lawyers have asked that he is kept on probation, saying he is serving "a lifetime sentence of self-punishment".

As well as seeking a four-year term, prosecutor David Walgren also said that Murray, 58, should pay restitution to Jackson's children.

Defence lawyer Ed Chernoff argued that Murray should not serve a sentence because he would already be punished for life by being known as "the man who killed Michael Jackson".

California's high prison population is expected to affect the length of time he spends behind bars. Any sentence is widely expected to be cut in half to ease overcrowding.

Murray could also lose his licence to practise medicine.
