2011 Canadian IDRC Internship Awards for Developing Countries’ Citizens

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is a Canadian organization created to help developing countries use science and technology to find practical, long-term solutions to the social, economic, and environmental problems they face.

Applications have been invited for the 2010 IDRC's Internship competition.

The competition attracts many highly qualified candidates. Those selected are assigned to various program initiatives to gain experience in an international development organization. The main goal of the Internship Awards is to provide exposure to research for international development through a program of training in research management and grant administration under the guidance of IDRC program staff.
Internships are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in research program management - in the creation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective.

Internships will be considered for a program of training and research responding to
IDRC's research priorities which focus on five broad Program Areas:
•   Social and Economic Policy
•   Agriculture and Environment
•   Information and Communication Technologies for Development
•   Innovation, Policy and Science
•   Research for Health Equity

The number of awards varies each year. Approximately 15 internships will be offered in 2011.

Internships are tenable, on a full-time basis, for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months commencing in January 2011 and completing in December 2011. Most internship is held at IDRC's head office in Ottawa and a few in regional offices. Internships are normally for duration of 12 months.

ELIGIBILITY

The program is aimed at candidates who, through demonstrated achievements in academic studies, work or research, have shown interest in the creation and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective.

All applicants must meet the following conditions:
a) They must be either Canadian citizen, have permanent resident status in Canada or be citizens of a developing country;
b) They must be either currently registered in a Master's Program at a recognized university or have completed a Master's degree in a recognized university. Doctoral students or candidates with a doctoral degree are also eligible to apply. The internship may be part of an academic requirement.


c) The research must focus on one or several developing countries.

Evaluation Criteria
•   Relevance of the research and training proposal to Internships offered by IDRC's programming units)
•   Relevance to sustainable and equitable development
•   Quality of the research and training proposal

Suitability of the candidate
•   Applicant's capacity to effectively conduct the proposed research and training
•   Overall feasibility, originality and creativity
•   Overall completeness and clarity of the research and training proposal
•   Applicant's knowledge of the local language where research is to be conducted.

ONLY eligible applicants with duly completed and timely applications will be considered
in connection with this Award Program.

Applications MUST be received at the Centre by September 12, 2010, 4:00 pm, EST.

It is important to note that candidates cannot receive any other government scholarship, award, subsidy, bursary, honorarium or hold any federal government contract in support of a research/work project for the duration of the award.
