MLA Scholarship for Minority Students, USA

The purpose of the Medical Library Association (MLA) Scholarship for Minority Students is to encourage candidates who show excellence in scholarship and potential for accomplishment in health sciences librarianship. The scholarship will be granted to a student who is entering a program at an ALA-accredited library school or continuing the study of health sciences librarianship at the master's level. The recipient also receives a one-year student membership in MLA, and free, inclusive student registration at the association’s annual meeting.

• The applicant must be a member of a minority group. A minority group is defined as African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, or Pacific Islander.
• The applicant must be entering an ALA-accredited graduate library school or must have completed no more than half of his or her graduate program at the time the award is made (February).
• The applicant must be a citizen of or have permanent residence status in the United States or Canada.
• A past recipient of the MLA Scholarship for Minority Students is ineligible.
• The applicant must submit nine copies of the completed application by December 1.
• The applicant must submit a minimum of two letters of reference and no more than three from persons not related to the applicant. The letters of reference should be from persons who are knowledgeable about the applicant's character, education, and abilities. Letters of reference must be submitted by December 1.
• By December 1, an official transcript from each college or university attended must be sent directly from the respective institution that grants either baccalaureate degree or library study degree.
• The applicant must include a statement of career objectives with the submitted application form.
• A scholarship of up to $5,000.00 paid in two equal installments.
• The period of disbursement will not exceed one year past the date of the annual meeting.
• Depending on the qualifications of the candidates, the jury may recommend that a scholarship not be awarded in a given year.
• MLA will acknowledge applications upon receipt via email.
