Kogi to demolish illegal structures in Lokoja

The Kogi State Government has said it will embark on the demolition of illegal structures in Lokoja, to give the city a befitting outlook.

The Deputy Governor, Mr Yomi Awoniyi, who made the announcement on Wednesday in Lokoja, said that the buildings to be demolished were on the right of way and that those without approved building plans would also be demolished.

He said that the move was aimed at beautifying the city and correcting some distortions in the master plan of the town.

Awoniyi noted that the exercise was also to uplift the status of the ancient city and make it more habitable and attractive to tourists and foreign investors willing to invest in the state.

The Deputy Governor who spoke after an inspection tour of dump sites in Lokoja, urged residents of the city to imbibe the culture of cleanliness.

He said Lokoja, being the gateway to the Northern and Southern parts of the country should always be seen to be in hygienic condition.

Awoniyi who also doubles as the Chairman of an Ad-hoc Committee on the beatification of Lokoja, appealed for support and understanding of the people to ensure the success the demolition project.

He promised that the original master plan of Lokoja would be restored, saying that plans were underway to expand and upgrade the existing markets in the town to accommodate more traders and discourage street trading. (NAN)
