Jang’s family friend charged over fire arms

     A 34 year-old medical doctor Dareng Gyang was yesterday arraigned before an Abuja chief Magistrate's Court over unlawful possession of fire arms.  

Police Prosecutor, Samuel Loote, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) alleged that Dareng Gyang, a medical doctor of Ray Field Top, Jos, Plateau State was nabbed on March 25, 2012 at about 1:30 pm.  

At the time of his arrest, two locally made pistols were found on him without license and he could not give any satisfactory account of how he came about the weapons upon interrogation, the prosecutor said.

Gyang, said to be close to the family of the Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, risks a five-year jail term if found guilty under the fire arms Act.

But when the charge was read out to the accused medical doctor at the Wuse Zone 6 chief Magistrate Court headed by Chief magistrate Azubuike Okeagu, Gyang pleaded not guilty to the charges.

He was later admitted to a bail of N.5m and two sureties in like sum. Further hearing has been fixed for July 11, 2012.

As at the time of filing this report, the accused medical doctor has already perfected the bail conditions and has been released temporarily.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ayuba Pam Dangwong, the special adviser to Governor Jonah Jang, in his reaction, said the governor is not aware of the case.

He said though the governor's family has a close relationship with the Dareng family, the governor has a physician who operates at the level of an adviser.

Dangwong added that though the governor is not aware of the case, he would not at anytime encourage anyone to be in possession of fire arm illegally as there are processes for acquiring such.

He said that Plateau is part and parcel of Nigeria and encourages every citizen to be law abiding.
