2011 Nigeria Election: Jega assures of INEC’s readiness on Voters registration

Against the fears expressed in some quota on the preparations for the 2011 general elections, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has assured on the Commission's readiness for the elections.

Speaking at an interactive and consultation meeting between INEC and the leaderships of political parties in Plateau, Nasarawa and Kogi states, in Jos, Plateau State on October 4, Professor Jega disclosed that the process for the procurement of the needed equipment for the voter registration exercise has been completed.

He stated that INEC had also met and received the support of stakeholders in the political process and its now on the verge of signing a MoU with civil rights organisations for their participation in the political process.

This he maintained is aimed at complementing the efforts of political parties in voter education, public enlightenment and political socialisation.

The Commission he stated further has developed new software completely owned by it to tackle the challenges that had hitherto questioned the credibility of voters' register.
The INEC Chairman also announced the commencement of the registration of over 360,000 ad hoc workers required for the voter registration exercise.

On the interactive workshop, Jega noted that it underscored the commitment of the commission to undertake fundamental internal reforms and overhaul its operational plans for the voters' registration and the elections
