Ogun State has become the first state to be granted a licence to distribute electricity.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) granted the licence to the Gateway Electricity Limited, a private public partnership venture between Power Systems Limited and the Ogun State government.

The letter granting the licence, signed by Mrs Olufunke Dinneh on behalf of the commission, is in consonance with the ESPR Act 2005 and the ongoing reforms in the power sector in the country.

Presenting the letter from NERC to the Ogun State Executive Council,  the Project Director of Gateway Electricity Limited, Mr Segun Aderibigbe, said   with the licence, Ogun State had blazed a new trail in the efforts to reposition the country's power sector.

He said the company now had the required mandate to distribute electricity in its catchment area, thereby contributing to the economic development of the state and Nigeria.

He assured the state executive council that the company would deploy modern technology to ensure hitch-free distribution of power which would be generated by the Ibafo Thermal Power Station, primed to generate 200MW of power, and the mini power plants being constructed by the Ogun State government, though in different parts of the state.

Aderibigbe said the company would take advantage of the Central Bank's intervention fund on independent power projects for the quick commencement of the project.
