The head of Ghana's medical team Dr Percy Annan is furious with Michael Essien for stating his injury was incorrectly diagnosed.

The Chelsea midfielder missed the World Cup in June/July after picking up a niggle during the African Nations Cup in Angola.

Essien stated that his condition was not properly assessed by the Black Stars backroom staff in January.

"I knew it wasn't the same injury as before, but when the doctor came he quite scared me because he said I'd done the same thing again," the maestro told a UK magazine.

"I told him, 'No, no, no'. I knew it wasn't the same, it wasn't the same pain, but he insisted. I got angry and in the end I told him to leave the room and let me relax. I came back to England, had another scan and they said it was the cartilage and meniscus, like I thought."

Annan, who is also in charge of treating Ghana's military personnel, is set to release a press statement detailing why Essien's claims are wide off the mark.

Meanwhile, the midfielder insists he has not quit the Black Stars contrary to media reports.

"I spoke to the manager and he told me he was going to give me a break to get my fitness back on track," Essien said.

"It is unfortunate that he (Milovan Rajevac) left, and we shall see who comes in, but I will go back."

Ghana tackle Sudan in an AFCON qualifier on Sunday and are expected to leave Accra for Kumasi on Friday.
