Maidugur - Two people were killed in an attack on a north-east Nigeria market that the military blamed on a radical Islamist sect waging an increasingly bloody sectarian battle in the country.

The attack happened on Wednesday in the city of Maiduguri, where the sect known as Boko Haram once had its main mosque. Witnesses said the gunmen came into the market and fatally shot two traders before fleeing while firing wildly into the air.

The witnesses requested anonymity out of fear of angering the military or the sect.

Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, a military spokesperson, blamed the attack on Boko Haram. He said soldiers later killed one suspected sect member and arrested two others who carried out an attack on a military post. - Sapa-AP
