UNILAG: Akande opposes name-change

OSOGBO—National Chairman of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Chief Bisi Akande, has faulted the renaming of University of Lagos after the acclaimed winner of the June 12,1993 presidential election, the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Fielding questions from newsmen in his country home, Ila-Orangun,Osun State, yesterday, Chief Akande said that inas much as he would have welcomed the development, the timing of  the announcement was wrong.

Akande argued that President Jonathan should not have made the pronouncement, especially when the university community was still mourning the untimely death of its Vice- Chancellor,Professor Babatunde Sofoluwe.

He noted that the late Abiola being a sport philanthropist not only in Nigeria but the entire Africa could have been honoured with naming of  the National Stadium, Abuja, after him.
