Dana plane crash: Bodies’ identification most challenging –Fashola

Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, yesterday appealed to family members and relatives of victims of the Dana plane crash to exercise patience so that proper identification could be carried on the bodies before they could be released.  The governor, who spoke at a press conference in Lagos yesterday, said the issue that was making the matter more challenging at this time was the problem of identification of the bodies.

"There is a big risk here of releasing the wrong body to the wrong family. Even yesterday, I was told that in the process of identifying there was almost a mix up between two families because of the state of the bodies. There are foreigners also involved. There is danger of giving away Nigerian body to be taken away", he said.

"We have no reason at all to delay the release of bodies of the victims; but our problem as I am told is about properly identifying the bodies. The pathologists are working round the clock. I have even spoken to the chief pathologist and he has assured me that if it is possible today they will begin to release those that can be identified.

He said the state government was already speaking with religious leaders to assist undertakers just as government was also making resources available. "We want the affected people to go through their periods of funerals as practically as possible and begin to manage grief and begin to reconcile with this unforeseeable accident," he said.
