Eligibility:

-Applicants must have achieved a first or upper second class pass for the Honours degree. Preference will be given to applicants who have achieved the relevant degree with distinction. The selection committee may however exercise discretion with regard to applicants who do not meet these standards

-Successful candidates will be required to register for full-time study in the Centre for Rhetoric Studies at the University of Cape Town. Awards offered will be subject to approval of registration in Rhetoric Studies

-Candidates who are employed full-time are ineligible to apply

-Successful candidates will be required to comply with the university's approved policies, procedures and practices for the postgraduate sector.

Scholarship Description: The A W Mellon Foundation has provided a grant to support scholarships to be awarded to graduate students who will register for full-time study for the Masters' and Doctoral degrees in the Centre for Rhetoric Studies at the University of Cape Town. Applications for the scholarships are invited from excellent Honours and Master's graduates in a relevant discipline, who will register for the Master's or Doctoral degree in the Centre for Rhetoric Studies, and who will study and/or conduct research on the significance of rhetoric for a democratic society.
