Opposition leader in Congo detained

Brazzaville - A Congolese opposition party says Mathias Dzon, its president and a candidate in the recent legislative elections, was stopped around 100 kilometers north of Brazzaville by police who are preventing him from entering the capital.

The Alliance for the Republic and Democracy said in a statement that Dzon was stopped Wednesday in the town of Odziba on his return  from the district of Gamboma, where he is running for a parliamentary seat.

The election was held on Sunday. Soon afterward, Dzon's partisans took over the voting bureau, demanding the immediate publication of  results out of fear the ruling party would rig the outcome.

Police opened fire, and three people were wounded. A helicopter transporting police reinforcements crashed on Tuesday, killing the Ukrainian crew. The election results are expected Thursday. - Sapa-AP
