Police arrest 11 robbery suspects in Lagos

IKEJA—The last two days in Lagos were characterised by intensified police patrols.

The activities, however, yielded results as the state Police Command said it picked no fewer  than 11 suspected robbers while an Ojo Magistrate's Court dissolved a three-year-old marriage while ruling in one of the many marriage crisis in the metropolis.

The Police Command, while assessing its activities in the last two days, said, yesterday, that it arrested 11 suspected members of different robbery gangs that have been terrorising Lagosians, recovering 17 arms and 11 ammunition and house-breaking implements.

Also recovered in the arrest made  between  Sunday and Monday, were cars suspected to have been stolen.

A breakdown of the arrest as revealed by spokesman for the command, Ngozi Braide,  showed that one of the arrests was about 5 a.m. on Monday at Ikorodu roundabout.

She explained that an eight-man robbery gang, which was driving in two vehicles, engaged a team of policemen attached to area 'N' Headquarters, Ijede, in a shoot-out.

In the process two suspected members of the gang were arrested with bullet wounds while the rest escaped in one of their operational vehicles, a Toyota Corolla Saloon  car with number-plate  EL 449 GGE.

Recovered at the end of the gun duel, according to  her, were one Beretta pistol with number  AHH-678, one Brownie pistol, three empty magazines, one wrist watch and $1 and N1,850 and one of their operational vehicles, a  Mercedes Benz Jeep ML 320 with number-plate  APP 443 AH.

Same day, she informed that  about 6.30pm, three  suspected members of a robbery gang who specialized in snatching vehciles from Lagosians and sell same across the boarder, were arrested by policemen attached to Alakuko division.

The suspects, identified as Omolaja Lawal, Monday Onogun  and Alade Lateef,  were reportedly arrested with two locally- made pistols, seven rounds of live cartridges and a Honda Accord S/Car with number-plate KSF 461 AL suspected to have been stolen at Ureni Yusuf Road, Alagbado.

Other arrests included that of a resident of Ijotin Oko-Afo, near Badagry.

He was  reportedly arrested with bullet wounds which he confessed to have sustained during a robbery operation in Tolu area in Ajegunle.

Also, at 2 am, yesterday, policemen attached to Ipaja Division while acting on a tip-off raided a criminal hideout at 24, Bosoro Street, Shagari Estate, Ipaja and arrested three people with one locally-made double barrel gun, two live cartridges and a matchet.

The previous day, 11pm,  policemen attached to Sabo Division while acting on information arrested two people  at Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, with one cut to size double gun and two live cartridges"

All cases, she said, had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.
