Gombe varsity students protest move to oust VC

Students of Gombe State University, yesterday, took to the streets of Gombe Metropolis in protest against alleged planned removal of the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Abdulahi Mahdi, by the institution's Governing Council.

President of Gombe State Students Association, GOSSA, who doubles as the interim Student Union Government, SUG, President, Abubarkar Kalosi, addressed students shortly before they staged the peaceful demonstration.

He said the students rejected the move by the Governing Council to remove the VC, who they said had grown and transformed the university from its inception in 2005 till date.

The students accused the Council Chairman of championing his personal agenda rather than acting in the interest of the students and the state at large. They called on the state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, to remove him as the Chairman of the Council.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Mahdi, who retired from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was appointed by former Governor of Gombe State, Senator Mohammad Goje.
