Don blames fake drugs boom on govt policy

IBADAN—CHIEF Medical Director of University College Hospital,UCH, Ibadan, Professor Temitope Alonge, has said proliferation of fake drugs should be blamed on government's policies.

He said the policy change drove genuine manufacturers away from the country and this allowed many fake drugs from India to flourish in the country.

He said this, weekend, at the 10th anniversary service  in memory of the daughter of Bishop of Christ Life Church, Bishop Francis Wale Oke.

The lady, Dorcas Oke was said to have died 10 years ago of complications  she developed as a result of fake drug application.

To check the menace of fake drugs, a foundation tagged Dorcas Oke Hope Alive Foundation (DOHAL), was established.

Alonge who spoke on Fake drugs and Survival of the African child alluded to a statistics released by the UNICEF in 2008 which stated that five million children died before reaching their fifth year.

On the average, he noted that 14,000 children died a day.

He charged Nigerians not to sit by and watch politicians  worsen the situation  but to rise up and make  them realize that their funding is through the citizens' taxes.

Earlier,  the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the NGO, Bolanle Awe  charged the youths to see the parlous situation of the country as a challenge that must not be allowed to continue.
