Scholarship Description: The Orange-Senqu River Commission (ORASECOM) was established in 2000 and aims to develop the Orange River for the benefit of all the riparian States. It is the first formal body established for the management of shared water resources since the Protocol on Shared Watercourse Systems became an instrument of international water law in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). It is expected to strengthen regional solidarity and enhance socioeconomic cooperation. The Commission is supported by the UNDP-GEF Orange-Senqu Strategic Action Programme which – amongst other aims – is committed to develop capacities and knowledge in the water resource management field. To this end, scholarships are awarded to practitioners in the field. The scholarship covers all fees and living expenses during time spent on campus, i.e. living expenses for full-time courses cover the full academic year and for part-time courses, those periods spent at the university. Travel costs, books, and other study-related costs are also covered. The scholarship is renewed biannually and renewal is subject to satisfactory academic progress. The total value of the scholarship is between ZAR 80,000 – 130,000, depending on needs in terms of travel, accommodation and tuition fees.
