The Federal Government is not offering the transmission companies of the nation's power sector for sale due to security reasons,it has been revealed.
Minister of State for Power, Darius Dickson Ishaku, who disclosed this during a visit to the Afam Power Station, also assured staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN)that they stand a brighter chance with the privatisation of the sector.
According to the minister, who was conducted round facilities in the station, there is no nation in the world that puts the transmission subsector of its power grid up for sale as it could be counter-productive.
He said power generation and distribution could be in private hands, but the link and the most critical part of the entire process that takes power to the final consumers is the transmission subsector, observing that when such is in private hands,  the entire nation could be held to ransom.
"No country in the world privatises the transmission company of its power sector, the transmission is the evacuation.            Without transmission, you can generate power, but it will still not get to the final consumer, so transmission becomes the most critical link between the generation and the distribution
"It is so critical that the nation's security depends on it, if you privatise it, the owner ofthat company can hold the whole nation to ransom. That is why the government thought it wise to only bring in management consultants who are to train Nigerians for a brief period and leave Nigerians to run it," Ishaku said.
On fears that the  privatisation process in the sector would render the current staff of  PHCN jobless, the minister noted that rather than fear, the staff should be grateful to government as it would give them better opportunities than now.
According to him, "I have addressed my staff and have told them that privatisation is all about hope; hope for a brighter tomorrow."
