Nigeria Is Sitting On Unemployment Time Bomb – Senator Usman

  Chairman of the Senate Committee on Investment, Mrs. Nenadi Usman, has raised the alarm that Nigeria is sitting on a time bomb as a result of the growing number of unemployed youths.
   Usman spoke in Jos on Thursday when she and members of the committee visited the Industrial Training Fund as part of their oversight functions.
    She said out of the country's population of over 150 million, one third of the figure is unemployed while half of the population is made up of youths.
She said what was needed was a lot of sensitisation on self-employment, to let the youths know that they don't have to be in offices to be employed.
    She said with the assistance of the ITF, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria and the National Directorate of Employment, Nigeria could puttogether a pool of self-employed people, who were ready to contribute to the country's economy.
    She said, "We have to let them know that if they devote 35 years of their lives to government work, they will retire one day and if they do, what next?"
    Usman said even after 41 years of its establishment, ITF was still relevant in Nigeria's quest for rapid industrialisation.
    Earlier, the Director General of ITF, Prof. Longmas Wapmuk, had told the delegation that ITF had trained over 12 million people, whose contributions to the national economy were numerous and diverse.
     He said as pioneers in human resource development, the role of the organisation in ensuring training consciousness in Nigerian employers not only largely accounted for the greater number of Nigerians that had been trained today, but also the league of consultants earning a living from the training.
    The DG said that to make ITF more relevant, it had embarked on a four-year programme of repositioning the Fund, massive training and retraining of staff, promotion of staff welfare and other strategies to achieve optimum performance.
