The Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu,  has described the Independent National Electoral Commission as sufficiently independent to perform its functions.
Ekweremadu, who is also the deputy Senate President, spoke against the background of agitations for further alterations of the national Constitution to accommodate requests for amendments to the Electoral Actahead of the 2015 general elections.
He said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, on Saturday.
He said, "For INEC, the most important thing for us is to ensure the independence of the election management body and we have been able to secure that.
"The president appoints but you also know the President cannot remove himself; it will require the resolution of the Senate.
"So, that is sufficient check. Besides, the Constitution earlier provided that the rules and programmes of the electoral commission should be approved by the President, we have removed that aspect from the Constitution.
"Now they don't need to and they will not revert to the President in the day to day running of their affairs, that's what the Constitution says presently. They are also sufficiently independent in terms of their finances because they are on first line charge.
"I think we have secured sufficient independence for the electoral body, this hasbeen exemplified in the manner the 2011 election was conducted.
He said he did not think there was much to look at in terms of further reforms in the electoral process.
"Except for us to look at the Electoral Act andsee if there are some areas we need to strengthen," he added.
