Port Harcourt -  Mr Collins Nwachukwu, a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), has warned against the creation of state police.

Nwachukwu in Port Harcourt on Monday said that the governors would abuse the outfit.

"Do not create state police to avoid secession where one governor considering his control over security personnel and arms would declare his own country.''

According to him, some state governors have abused power in the past to the detriment of their political opponents.

He said that some of them had arbitrarily used state owned para-military personnel initiated and funded by them against individuals perceived to be enemies.

"Some state governors may have been working against the Federal Government politically, immediately you arm them with police, they would declare independence.

"Nigeria is not yet matured for it, we have a lot of immature politicians who may not understand the functions and reasons for its creation," Nwachukwu said.

Recalling the 1967 secession of the Eastern region, Nwachukwu blamed it on the regional autonomy of the force.

He urged the National Assembly to as a matter of urgency expunge any proposal for the creation of state police.

"If the lawmakers want us to remain indivisible, they should kill the dream or agitation from any quarters for the creation of state police.

"Because if created, there would be issues of one governor trying to challenge the President's orders rudely,'' he said.

Nwachukwu advised the Federal Government to adequately fund the police force to prevent further calls for the creation of state police.

He said that the rot in the police could be addressed with proper reforms through adequate funding and supervision.

"If the Nigerian police had been good, people would not have been clamouring for state police.

"Government should address those areas that needed to be looked into, salary structure, code and discipline," Nwachukwu said. (NAN)
