One dead, four hurt in ICoast attack

Accra - At least one person was killed and four were injured in an attack on a military post in Ivory Coast, the Ivorian news agency said Monday.

Armed assailants on Sunday attacked bases of Ivory Coast's Republican Forces (FRCI) and the police in Bonoua, 60 kilometres east of the capital, Abidjan.

"There was one death, probably an assailant, and four persons of  our ranks got wounded, including three FRCI," police commissioner Bonoua Ambéké Ségla was quoted as saying.

The Republican Forces fought in Ivory Coast's 2011 post-electoral conflict along Alassane Ouattara, the country's current president, to help oust former leader Laurent Gbagbo from power.

The assailants first attacked the city's police station and military barracks. They then targeted an FRCI checkpoint nine kilometres east of Bonoua.

The FRCI repelled the attackers, who fled towards the border with Ghana, according to security officers.

On the same night, a thermal power plant in western Abidjan was attacked by armed men, the press agency reported. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Similar attacks in Abidjan and near the border with Ghana prompted Ivory Coast to seal its borders with its western neighbour.

The borders were re-opened on October 8. - Sapa-dpa
