Mayhem in Ila-Orangun as students protest death of 2 colleagues

Mayhem broke out in Ila-Orangun, headquarters of Ila Local Government Area ofOsun State yesterday as students of the state college of education located in the town staged a bloody protest over the death of two of their colleagues in a ghastly road accident.
The death of the two students who were simply identified as Sodiq and Wale of the Department of Accounting and Arts respectively sparked the breakdown of law and order in the town as students protested the deaths staging violent protest in the town.
During the melee, a part of the palace of the Orangun of Ila-Orangun, Oba Wahab Oyedotun Bibiire, was burnt by the irate students. Other property in the community were also burnt.
The aggrieved students also burnt a part of the secretariat of Ila Local Government Area during the protest when their request to see the chairman of the local government was not granted.
Tyres and other inflammable materials were burnt at popular junctions in the town including Igbonibi Junction, Sharp Corner, College Road and other important areas  where students of the college reside.
It was gathered that the two deceased students died in an accident on their way to the campus. The students said the government should be held responsible for the deaths owing to the deplorable conditionof the road leading to their campus.
Welfare Officer of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the college, Mr. Tanimomo Opeyemi told Daily Sun that, "the two students were on the bike rushing to meet up with early morning lectures when the accident occurred. The accident was as a result of loads of sand poured on the road bythe construction company rehabilitating the road."
He explained that the contractor handling theproject had since abandoned it and no effort was made by the state government to call it to order, adding that the students were victims of circumstance.
Already, authorities of the institution have closed down the college to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
A statement by the Registrar of the college, Alhaji G. O. Kolawole directed all the students of the college to proceed on mid semester break and vacate the campus immediately in their own interest. The statement added that the date of resumption would be communicated to the students through the media, urging them to remain peaceful and orderly as they vacate the town.
Also, the SUG President of the college, Mr. Akindele Rauf ordered the students to vacate the town immediately, saying the leadership of the students union was making frantic efforts to control the situation in the town.  Source:Daily Sun
