Gov’s Cup II: Five Nigerians zoom into second round

After their disappointing display in last week's Governor's Cup, Nigerian tennis players seem to have found the winning formular as no fewer than five of them qualified in their respective singles matches of the Governor's Cup Futures II holding at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, reports John Egbokhan.

Lawal, the country's highest ranked player Abdulmumini Babalola in straight sets of 7-6, 6-4 to land in the second round, holding tomorrow while Clifford Enosoregbe was made to work hard for the second round ticket by Monday Igbinovia, who lost in three thrilling sets of 4-6, 7-6, 3-6.

Sanni Adamu also qualified for the next round. On account of his 6-2, 6-0 straight sets victory over Onyeka Mbanu.

In the  women's singles, Fatimah Abinu, who is the highest ranked Nigerian player, qualified for the second round, beating Blessing Samuel in two sets of 6-3,7-5, while Blessing Anuna defeated Abiodun Oyegoke in quick sets of 6-1,6-0.

But the victorious run did not extend to fast rising youngster,  Kehinde Alade, who lost in straight sets of 3-6, 3-6 to Karim Hossam of Egypt while Henry Atseye was forced to abandon his match against  Germany's Mario Eckardt, with the latter leading 6-3,3-0..

In other matches, Alessandro Petrone of Italy defeated Umoru Balami in straight sets of 6-2,6-2 while injury forced Samuel Omoile to abandon his match against Mark Fynn of Zimbabwe, with the foreigner leading 6-4, 4-6, 5-1.
