Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has revealed that former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is currently in discussions with prominent figures in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in a recent interview, Lawal confirmed that several key politicians from both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ADC coalition have been holding meetings with Kwankwaso in a bid to bring him into their fold.
“Kwankwaso is a very influential politician, and any political movement would benefit from his presence,” Lawal said.

He described the former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) as a political heavyweight whose grassroots appeal would significantly boost the strength of any coalition. According to Lawal, many members of the ADC coalition are enthusiastic about the possibility of Kwankwaso joining them.
“I am aware that people have been holding meetings with Kwankwaso. Clearly, he is welcome in the ADC coalition because he belongs to a group of influential figures who command large followings,” he said.
When asked whether the coalition is specifically targeting the NNPP party structure, Lawal clarified that the focus is not on political platforms but on attracting individuals with proven political strength.
“The coalition is not about political parties, but about individuals moving into it. It is not the logo or letterhead that matters—it is the people. Whether they come individually or in groups, they are welcome,” he explained.
Lawal added that even if Kwankwaso ultimately decides not to join, many of his supporters could still align with the ADC.
“Whether he joins alone or with the NNPP, he is welcome. But even if he doesn’t come, some of his supporters may still find their way to the ADC. We are already seeing some signs of this happening at the grassroots level,” he said.
He further stated that some local government chapters of the NNPP may eventually merge with the ADC, even if the NNPP’s national leadership remains separate.
Lawal also disclosed that several high-profile politicians from other parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have been quietly joining the ADC without formal declarations.
“Big individuals in various states are joining the ADC quietly. They’re not making noise about where they are coming from. Atiku Abubakar joined the ADC and didn’t say the PDP was moving with him,” he claimed.
The former SGF concluded by emphasising that the coalition’s real strength lies in its grassroots mobilisation, asserting that the 2027 election battle will be determined at the community level.
“The focus is on the grassroots. That’s where the real political game is played, and that is where we are concentrating our energy,” he said.
