A 43-year-old man, Francis Essien, on Friday appeared in a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly being in possession and circulation of fake currency to buy newspaper from a vendor.

The police charged Essien, who resides in Ogunnike, St., Lekki Lagos State with one count of issuance of fake currency.
The prosecution counsel, Insp. Ajaga Agboko, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Sept. 21 about 9.30 a.m. at Falomo Roundabout, Ikoyi Lagos State.
He alleged that the defendant issued a fake N1,000 note to a vendor, Mr Edward Odion and collected N750 change.
Agboko also alleged that Essien came back that same day with another fake N500 to purchase a sport newspaper.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 372 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Magistrate T.A. Anjorin-Ajose admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He adjourned the case until Oct. 21 for hearing.
