While there will always be the ‘jollof wars’ between Nigeria and Ghana, (as neither will admit that it’s all just subjective), one thing we can all agree on is that, more often than not, when two stars from both countries come together on a track, it’s usually fantastic.
The latest addition to this long list of impressive collaborations is Ghanaian singer, King Promise’s “Tokyo”, which features one of our biggest musical powerhouses, Wizkid.
King Promise is set to release his debut album soon, and a few months ago he released the first song off it, “Abena”. Now, he’s given us another taste of what’s to come with this one, and he has definitely sparked our interest in his music.
Against a slow-paced beat produced by Killbeats, Wizkid skillfully handles the hook — which has been his strongest point since the beginning of his career — while King Promise soars on his verses, seamlessly alternating between English and Twi.
The crisp video is mostly performative, as we see King Promise and Wizkid singing along in an ostentatious setting. Filled with bikini-clad women swimming and dancing, the video is exactly what you’d expect for this kind of afropop jam.
