InfoStride News reports that TotalEnergies has stated that the recent oil spill in the Egina field has not impacted oil production. The leak occurred during loading operations on November 15, and Charles Ebereonwu, the Communication Manager in Nigeria, confirmed that production at the site remains unaffected. TotalEnergies is actively managing the situation, conducting aerial surveillance, and applying dispersants to contain the spill.
Collaborating with spill detention agencies and the oil industry regulator, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is working to control the spill. The exact volume of the spill has not been confirmed, but shoreline communities near Egina, including Andoni, Qua-Iboe terminals, Bonny Island, Opobo/Nkoro, and Eastern Obolo, have not reported any impact so far.
The UK-based Oil Spill Response Limited is supporting pollution control measures. Bashir Jimoh, the Director General of NIMASA, emphasized collaboration with stakeholders to control pollution and prevent future incidents in line with the MARPOL Convention’s guidelines for marine pollution prevention.

TotalEnergies began production at the Egina field on December 29, 2018. Located 1,600 meters deep in water and 150 kilometers from Nigeria’s coastline, the field plays a crucial role in the country’s oil production, capable of producing 200,000 barrels of oil per day, contributing to about 10% of Nigeria’s total oil production.
The Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit used for the Egina field is the largest ever built by Total. The license renewal for the OML 130 block, announced by TotalEnergies on May 29, 2023, includes both the Akpo and Egina fields. Positioned 150 kilometers off Nigeria’s coast, OML 130 block yielded a production of 282,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2022.
Recent data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) indicates that the Egina field extracted 2,866,010 barrels of crude oil in October 2023. In comparison, the field produced 3,230,325 barrels of crude as of January 2023.
TotalEnergies holds a 24% interest in operating OML 130, collaborating with partners such as CNOOC (45%), Sapetro (15%), Prime 130 (16%), and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, serving as the concessionaire of the Production Sharing Contract (PSC). InfoStride News will continue to monitor and report on developments related to this incident and TotalEnergies’ operations in the Egina field.
