Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has issued a directive to suspend the delegates congress for the bye-election into Guma State Constituency, citing irregularities and concerns over potential unrest.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi on Saturday, Governor Alia revealed that the congress was disrupted by unidentified individuals attempting to hijack the process.
Expressing his apprehension about the heightened emotions among the youth in the area, Governor Alia emphasized the need to avert any potential breakdown of law and order.

He stated, “The exercise was marred by irregularities as unknown people came to the venue to hijack the process. Youths in the area have become emotional, which could lead to a breakdown of law and order.”
Governor Alia highlighted the importance of restoring peace in Guma Local Government Area (LGA), which has been a hotspot for violence in the state.
He emphasized that the suspension of the congress was necessary to prevent further tension and maintain stability.
He stated, “Peace is returning to Guma LGA, which has been a flashpoint of violence in the state, and there is every need to suspend the congress to arrest a descent to anarchy.”
Asserting his responsibility to maintain peace and security in the state, Governor Alia instructed security agencies to ensure law and order, preventing any security breaches that could arise from the situation.
He also assured that the national leadership of the party would take measures to uphold peace within the party.
Governor Alia’s decision to suspend the delegates congress reflects the delicate political environment in Benue State, underscoring the importance of ensuring a fair and peaceful electoral process in the lead-up to the bye-election.
