Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has authorized the disbursement of over N967 million for the payment of registration fees for indigenous students studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abdullahi-Tunga, lauded the governor’s decision, hailing it as a demonstration of his dedication to nurturing youths for future leadership positions.
Abdullahi-Tunga disclosed the approval during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi, revealing that 20,908 Kebbi State students in 36 tertiary institutions nationwide would benefit from the sponsorship.

He highlighted the governor’s vision to revamp higher education in the state and ensure that youths capitalize on the current political climate.
“In light of the above and in alignment with His Excellency’s vision and mission of revolutionizing higher education in the state, and his resolve to ensure that the youth benefit from the agenda of the current political era by sponsoring students within and outside the country for the educational advancement of the state, His Excellency has, therefore, graciously approved the sum of N967,685,854 million as fees for the 20,908 students for the 2022/2023 academic session.”
The Commissioner emphasized that such benevolence would establish a strong footing for youths, contributing to the emergence of a new leadership era.
However, he voiced concern over sponsoring students abroad to study courses available in Nigeria, suggesting that students should only be sent overseas for courses not readily accessible in Nigerian universities.
He argued that there was no wisdom in sponsoring students to study courses available in the country.
