Following the Edo State House of Assembly’s resolution last Tuesday, Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa has assembled a seven-man panel to investigate the petition against the State’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.
The House of Assembly had served a notice of impeachment on the deputy governor on March 6, 2024, over alleged misconduct and perjury, giving him seven days to respond to the petition.
However, due to the deputy governor’s alleged evasion of being served the impeachment notice, the House ordered a substituted means of service through the state-owned Observer Newspaper and the Vanguard Newspapers. The notice was published on March 12, 2024.

In its plenary on March 19, 2024, the House passed a resolution directing the Chief Judge to establish a seven-man panel to probe the allegations against the deputy governor.
The panel, chaired by retired Justice S.A. Omonua, includes three professors from the University of Benin and Benson Idahosa University: Violet Aigbokhaevbo, Boniface Onomion Edegbai, and Theresa Akpoghome.
Other members are Surveyor Andrew Oliha, Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, and Idris Abdulkareen.
In compliance with the resolution, the Chief Judge constituted the panel on Friday, as announced in a statement signed by the Chief Registrar of the State High Court, B.O. Osawaru.
The panel is tasked with investigating the allegations contained in the impeachment notice against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu in accordance with Section 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
